Anyone who has traveled using directions and maps from the Internet probably got them from Google Maps (GM) - and there's a pretty good chance you've been confused or the map was simply wrong - telling you to zig when you should have zagged.

GM...and no not the struggling automaker...is a wonderful tool for small, local businesses...when it works properly.

A Google Maps Help thread and this blog post shed light on the problem with a question from a small business near Atlanta. His company is in the Buckhead section - a well-known and affluent Atlanta suburb.

When searching on Google using general local keyword phrases - e.g. "signs buckhead" - the Google map search results that appear when a town is used in the search displayed "Bankhead" instead, another area of Atlanta far away from his business.

Google has acknowledged the problem and is looking into it.

But, these types of mistakes can possibly have lasting impacts on customer traffic and sales. And as more people use the Internet to find local businesses, Google is a lot of times the first place they go for information.

Do a general search on Google using keywords related to your industry and include your town - be sure the directions, address and even town are correct in GM so customers will be able to find you.
