Search engines earn high marks from consumers - but not as high as supermarkets, according to the latest
Harris Interactive poll.
For the past eight years, Harris Interactive has been polling a cross-section of US adults to find out which industries are doing a good job or a bad job of serving their consumers.
This year, supermarkets topped the list, with 92% of the respondents indicating that they thought they were generally doing a good job. (Only 8% felt they were doing a bad job, leading to a net score [i.e. good job minus bad job] of 84 positive percentage points.)
Search engines ranked third, with 68 points. Other industries that garnered high net scores were computer hardware companies with 74 points and computer software companies and packaged food companies, both with 67.
Attitudes toward online businesses varied. ISPs and online retailers scored much lower than search engines.
At the bottom of the scale was the oil industry, with negative 36 points, the only industry to score worse than last year. Healthcare companies and insurers also landed in negative territory, just ahead of the tobacco industry.
