Click Fraud - It's Here to Stay

It's time to get serious about tracking this if you're spending any kind of dollars on PPC advertising:

Ten Internet firms, including Google, Yahoo and AOL, are accused of knowingly overcharging for pay-per-click online advertising

An e-commerce site has filed a lawsuit against several search engines including Google and Yahoo, alleging that they knowingly overcharged for pay-per-click online advertising — a method of advertising that involves the payment of a fee every time a user clicks on an advert.

Lane's Gifts and Collectibles, an US-based gift shop that advertises on the Internet, claims that search engines colluded to overcharge advertisers, according to the Associated Press. more


Click fraud is an increasing concern in the industry, with 70 percent of search engine advertisers worried about it, according to a recent survey by SEMPO, an organisation that promotes search-engine marketing.

While search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Ask Jeeves have to acknowledge the problem in regulatory filings or lose their SEC certification, their everyday track record in actually addressing advertisers complaints is, to put it very mildly, an exceedingly poor one. Nor will they let on in any meaningful sense of the term which measures, technical or otherwise, they have in place by way of preventing large scale click fraud in the first place.
