It's no secret that consumers scour the Internet to research products before making a purchase. Shoppers want information before they buy. Those retailers providing the information shoppers seek in a unique manner can enjoy significant advantages over other retailers competing for a shopper's purchase.

Your product pages can gain organic search engine visibility. There's much to be said for having your products show up on the first page of Google or Yahoo. Organic search engine listings can bring valuable traffic directly to your product pages without the per-click cost of paid search. You can reach way beyond existing marketing campaigns to a whole new set of consumers who may have never heard of you or thought to shop on your site otherwise.

But search engines don't like duplicate content. They work hard to return useful results to searchers - and that means filtering out all the "me too" web pages containing the same content.

This puts you at a severe disadvantage if you're using the standard supplied copy for product descriptions - the same as every other retailer. Search engines are likely to favor the manufacturer's web site or a retailer that has added elements to customize its product page, while filtering out all the other sites showing the standard copy. Including yours.

Helping a Technology Company Communicate More Powerfully
Featured Case Study

Communicating benefits in a way that immediately resonates with your customers can be a challenge, especially when you offer a technology-based solution. Channel Intelligence manages product data for some of the world's largest retailers and manufacturers. Its proprietary database technologies offer significant advantages over those of their competitors. The challenge is to make those advantages clearly understood.

Secure Your Company's Name on Social Media Sites
Tools You Can Use

Maybe your company is already going full force on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Or maybe you're hesitating due to company bureaucracy or lack of time.

If you've not yet registered your company on the major social media web sites, it's a good idea to secure your business's name and/or brands right away. This will protect those assets and ensure you'll have the choice to build out those pages later.

Many of the social media sites let you create a page that uses your company's name in the URL. For example, our company profile on Twitter is found at: http://twitter.com/seo_advantage. Facebook and LinkedIn seem to be heading in the same direction, soon allowing you to specify your company's name in the page URL.

What other sites should you look at? Here are some to get you started: Digg.com, newsvine.com, StumbleUpon.com, Blip.tv, and Squidoo.com.

@ SEO Advantage

Most companies like to completely redesign their web site every so often - some as frequently as every year. Here's why you may not want to do that...

We've just given www.seo-advantage.com a facelift. You'll see we've retained many of our identifying features, such as the grey color, now spiced up with colorful buttons. Our content is still front and center, to continue to offer our trademarked value to site visitors, though with a simplified navigation structure.

We could have completely redesigned the site. Our art director is truly talented, and it would be a great way to show off her creative direction. However, our guiding factor is always our audience.

You see, a website gains equity the longer it's online. Its visitors come to know and expect the familiar. Completely shaking up your web site design can reduce that equity and alienate customers. People don't like major change - they can handle it better in small chunks.

Another important point to remember is that if your site is completely redesigned, then you have no way of knowing which element is responsible for any changes in performance.

So if your website design is feeling stale to you, remember that your customers may not feel the same way. If it's really in need of an update, find the most impactful areas and update those first. Measure any changes in leads or sales from your site. Then work next on those components you think need further refinement. Your website design will always be in a state of flux, but there will be few instances where it should be completely scrapped and created anew.
